Hope Gangloff is one of my favorite current artists. I discovered her work about five years ago through the website Art Department, another favorite of mine. She is a modern day realist, illustrating scenes of her stylish friends in various everyday settings. She uses pen and ink in most of her drawings, creating an unusual texture to her work. Gangloff leaves a lot of negative space open for the viewer to fill in or interpret for themselves. She mixes that openness with bright bursts of color (mostly red) and then selects certain areas to draw attention to through heavy details. Her figures and lines are reminiscent of another one of my favorite artists, Egon Schiele. Gangloff was born in New York State, she studied at Cooper Union, and currently lives in New York City.
