This post just needed to happen today, it's difficult to accurately express why but here goes. My long-time friend and I are both currently pregnant with girls, and somehow today we started a conversation about the whole big-eyed cutesy thing going on, think Zooey DeChanel (or however you spell her name). I suggested my friend look up Blythe dolls and her response was, "just googled that, immediately flew into a rage and ex-ed out of the screen." I have to admit that I think they're kind of cute in a sinister sort of way.
My friend thinks the big-eyed thing has to do with women feeling like they need to look child-like forever and sexually aroused. I have never heard that last one before, but I understand where she's coming from. I don't necessarily see the big-eyed cutesy thing the same as she does though. In high school this same friend once suggested I do an experiment. She said I should dress really pretty and wear a skirt one day and then wear something baggy and tomboyish the next, and just observe the difference in how guys treated me. I tried it out, and I can't say I noticed anything.
I whole-heartedly consider myself to be a feminist. I just don't always pick up on the subtleties of oppression that come with being a woman. Either way I think I would rather have my daughter playing with one of these dolls than a Barbie or an American Girl Doll. There is something so artistic and expressive about them. They remind me of the characters in the old Christmas movies that I watched as a kid.
